Chickpeas, garbanzo beans, little nuggets of love… whatever you like to call them, chickpeas are an incredibly versatile, delicious, and healthy staple in our plant-based diet. There are so many tasty ways you can use them in recipes, so today we’re sharing our Top 5 favorite ways to enjoy this legendary legume.
#1 - Hummus
The easiest, fastest, most delicious dip you can make is hummus. Once you have a good base recipe for it, there are an infinite number of ways you can flavor and season it. You can make it thick for a dip, or thin it out for a salad dressing. It’s a staple in our diet (and most vegans we know too) and we like to always have it on hand for snacking and spreading on sandwiches, wraps, or anything we want!

#2 - Chickpea Salad
If you mash canned chickpeas up with a potato masher, they end up with a flaky texture that resembles tuna or some other canned meat from the pre-plantbased days. When mixed up with seasonings and a good oil-free sauce, it makes a hearty salad that you can use just like you would a tuna salad: in wraps, sandwiches, or on a bed of greens. It travels well too; we like to throw some in mason jars to pack for our camping trips. It tastes good at pretty much any temperature and it lasts a long time in the fridge. Great for meal prep!

#3 - Falafels
Healthy falafels are surprisingly easy to make! You need to use dry (not cooked) chickpeas for this recipe. Grind them in the food processor with some other spices then pop them in the air-fryer and you’ve got a delicious little patty to stuff into a soft pita pocket with some creamy tzatziki sauce. Mmm mmm!!

#4 - Spinach-Artichoke Dip
You wouldn’t expect there to be chickpeas in a spinach-artichoke dip but they lend a fantastic creaminess to a flavor combo that usually gets it’s creaminess from artery-clogging dairy. We say “no thank you!” to that but we’re happy to keep all the ingredients that make this beloved dip so good. We use frozen artichokes from Trader Joe’s because they aren’t brined and there’s only one ingredient listed on the package: artichoke hearts. You can serve this dip hot or cold and spread it on just about anything!

#5 - Brownie Batter Hummus
We know that chocolate and chickpeas aren’t the first combo that comes to most people’s minds but did you know that chickpeas work surprisingly well in dessert recipes too? We made a fantastic chocolate hummus last Valentine’s Day and it tasted like such an indulgent treat, even though it was still totally healthy! Blow someone’s mind next Valentine’s Day with this healthy chickpea twist.
