Sloppy Joes and Coleslaw are not something you would normally think of as a healthy meal, but not anymore! Today we are whipping up delicious whole food plant-based Sloppy Joes with Coleslaw. Both of these recipes are salt-free, oil-free, and sugar-free, so you can enjoy the nostalgic flavors of your childhood without all the nasty junk and unnecessary ingredients.
Just because these Sloppy Joes don’t come from a can, they are still just as easy to whip up. We usually don’t make copycat recipes from the Standard American Diet, but this one just works so perfectly!
Lentils are so perfect for this recipe and if you slightly overcook them they will get mushy for an even more perfect texture.
This recipe was a huge hit when we first made it on Well Your Weekend, our live cooking show where members have access to 450+ exclusive recipes as well as two live shows a month with brand new recipes. Interact with us during the show and tell us your suggestions for the recipe or ask any questions you may have. But this show isn’t just about recipes, make like-minded friends in the chat box and enjoy the company of people who eat the same way as you!
This recipe might be fast, but you can make it even faster!
This recipe is really fast to whip up even on a busy weeknight. Make this a no-chop recipe by using bags of frozen chopped onion and bell pepper! And if you don’t have time to cook lentils, use a can of no-salt added lentils from Westbrae Natural.
The sauce is what truly gives this recipe that classic Sloppy Joe flavor that we all know and love. Instead of making a sauce and getting the blender dirty, use Well Your World BBQ Sauce. Unlike the BBQ sauce you see at the store, our’s is made with healthy whole food ingredients. And just like in the recipe, we sweeten our BBQ sauce naturally with whole raisins instead of high fructose corn syrup and sugar.
A healthy, whole food plant-based diet shouldn’t be restricting or boring. You can still make tasty recipes faster, easier, cheaper, and of course healthier than the Standard American Diet…and this recipe is an example of just that.
Bring this recipe to your next potluck and you are sure to get many compliments and no leftovers to take home. Enjoy the recipe and show us how your Sloppy Joes by tagging us on Instagram or share in our Facebook Community!

Kid AND adult approved!
Ingredients:
- Lentils
- 1-¼ cups dry lentils
- 1 yellow onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- sliced green onion, to serve
- whole wheat bread or baked potatoes, to serve
- Coleslaw, to serve
- Sauce
- 1 15 oz. can tomato sauce
- 5 deglet dates
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon mustard
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 3-5 garlic cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 tablespoon chili powder (mild or hot)
- 1 teaspoon chipotle pepper powder (optional)
- 2 tablespoons Nooch - Well Your World Nutritional Yeast
- 1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon celery seed (optional)
- black pepper, to taste
Instructions:
Start by cooking the lentils. The best way to cook lentils is like pasta: adding more water than is needed to cook and then straining it at the end. Bring the water to a boil, add the lentils, reduce the heat, and simmer for about 20 minutes.
In a separate pan, sauté the onion and green bell pepper, adding a little water or veggie broth as needed to keep from sticking. Once they are tender, set aside.
To prepare the sauce, add all of the ingredients to a high speed blender and blend until smooth, adding additional water if needed.
Combine the sauce, lentils, and onion and pepper mixture into one pot and simmer for about 10 minutes to bring the sauce to temperature. Serve on whole wheat bread or baked potatoes with coleslaw on top!
