Gimme pizza! I think we’re just about ready to build the perfect healthy vegan pizza with you today. This isn’t our first pizza video but it is our fastest and easiest one to date. If you don’t feel like going to the trouble of making your own pizza dough from scratch, a wonderful and healthy substitute is Trader Joe’s whole wheat Lavash Bread.
The way we like to do our pizza is to chop all the ingredients first and put them all in little bowls. It’s great for parties because it allows everyone to customize their pizzas with their favorite flavors. Even if you’re not hosting a pizza party, making a pizza bar can cover everyones meals for an entire day. Just chop all the ingredients, make your pizzas, then just cover up everything and leave it out. That way you can quickly make a different pizza when you get hungry again. I’ve never met anyone who complained about eating pizza twice in one day, have you?
You don’t have to do a lot of chopping if you don’t want to; you can easily pick up some pre-chopped fresh or frozen vegetables. We don’t mind chopping and it’s just as easy to chop a lot as it is to chop a little. Any leftover veggies after pizza day can count as meal prep for the week.
Some of favorite pizza toppings include (but are not limited to):
Bell Peppers
Mushrooms
Onions (julienned)
Zucchini
Sliced black olives (leave them out if you’re totally salt-free of course)
Broccoli
Corn
Little plum tomatoes
Artichoke Hearts (Trader Joes carries them frozen with no salt!)
Capers
Slivered brussel sprouts
I don’t eat tempeh much but found out what a great pizza topping it can make during this video. I just crumbled it up and tossed it a variety of seasonings including garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, garam masala, chipotle powder, and couple dashes of liquid smoke. I used water to sauté it on the stove and let it cook for about 10 minutes (tempeh does need to be thoroughly cooked or it can be quite bitter).
We can’t forget one of the most important ingredients: Pizza Sauce!
We recently released our very own Well Your World Pizza Sauce because we love pizza day so much! It’s the perfect SOS-free sauce for your next healthy pizza party. If you don’t want to order our Pizza Sauce, just make your own with some canned tomato sauce and your favorite Italian herbs and spices.
We bake our Lavash pizzas at a high temperature (at least 450º) for 10-12 minutes. The lavash bread gets nice and crispy and perfectly carries the sauce and toppings without making us feel bloated after eating it. Finally, we like to add more toppings to the pizza right out of the oven. Dillons’ favorite topping is fresh baby arugula. Then we sprinkle on some of our Well Your World Nooch and some pinenuts for a little extra crunch (if we have them). And crushed red pepper flakes. Lots of those. Mmmmhmmmm.
We hope this gave you some good ideas the next time you’re craving a pizza! We also think this technique would work well on whole wheat pita bread if you can’t find the lavash. Heck, it’d probably even be delicious on corn tortillas! As Dillon loves to say, “The sky’s the limit!”
