Ah, kitchen gadgets. When I first went plant-based, I had an oven, a stove, and a microwave. As I didn’t really know how to cook, I found the microwave quite helpful as I could quickly cook potatoes in the event of an “emergency.”
Soon though, I started adding some fancier gadget investments to my arsenal. Now that I live with Dillon, the number of gadgets we have has simply gotten out of hand (almost, but not really, since we do use them all). Here are our TOP 5 favorites, and why we love them. Don’t forget that all of these gadgets can be found on our gear page here.
#5 - The Electric Non-Stick Griddle
I had to wholeheartedly convince Dillon to spend the $35 on one of these bad boys. I can’t imagine cooking hash browns, pancakes, tortillas, or bean burgers without it. This magic griddle has a non-stick surface that can rival even the priciest of cookware. If you are like us and love the Well Your World Banana Pancakes, then this appliance is a must for non-stick perfection. We have the Black and Decker brand, but the Presto is just as good in our book.
#4 - The Air Fryer
In my opinion, air fryers took WFPB no-oil eating to an entirely new level. I almost think they were designed just for us. Finally a way to “fry” without any oil! It’s incredible! Think of all of the french fries, onion rings, and cauliflower bites you can make with one of these things! I wouldn’t call this a necessity item, since you can technically cook these items in the oven, but the extra crispy crunch an air fryer can give definitely brings joy to my life. We have a fancy-pants Breville Smart Oven Air, but any run of the mill air fryer with a pull-out drawer will do.
#3 - A Food Processor
For the longest time, I was convinced I didn’t need a food processor. With my Vitamix in tow, I didn’t see the need. Ever since using Dill’s Breville Peel & Dice though, I am a changed woman. There are certain things that might need to be finely ground, minced, or chopped that a food processor can do that a blender just cannot. Of course, you can always do it by hand.... A food processor is a luxury item. But if you’re doing large-volume cooking, it can really be a lifesaver in the kitchen. Dillon’s is a fancy version with the dicing function that really we only use for pico, but you can get by with almost any decent food processor out there.
#2 - The Instant Pot
I cannot imagine my life before the Instant Pot! When I first received this device, I left it in its box for a good 6 months. I was so scared of it! There was no need to be scared though. The Instant Pot pressure cooker is very user friendly and even easier and faster than cooking. We love this for making a giant batch of potatoes, our various soups and stews, starch blaster, you name it. I even make my rice in the Instant Pot. I love how you can basically set it and forget it when it comes to meals with this, and it cooks in less than half the time.
#1 - The Vitamix
Finally, the holy grail of vegan gadgetry.. The Vitamix! Unlike our other top gadgets, the Vitamix high speed blender is one where I stand by the brand and INSIST other people invest in this brand. They can be pricey, but you can usually find them on sale at Costco, or refurbished on Amazon. I said in the video that owning a Vitamix is almost a right of passage to being a vegan. It just purees and liquifies everything, including unsoaked nuts and seeds, with ease. We use it almost daily for salad dressings, sauces, blended soups, smoothies, and so much more. If you don’t get any other gadget on this list, get this one, or have someone get it for you!
Bonus #1 - The Soda Stream
The soda stream doesn’t make our top 5, but we do think it’s a nifty gadget to have to make your own version of homemade La Croix. It carbonates water and does it on a dime. You could make many refreshing summer beverages, mocktails, and sparkling teas with the soda stream. Just don’t fall prey to using those disgusting sugary syrups that come with it. No good!
Bonus #2 - An Air Popper
If you love popcorn, you need an air popper. It is the best way to make oil-free popcorn that comes out perfect every time. We love to make and spray on some Braggs and top it with the Well Your World Nooch. Don’t bother buying one of these new… there are tons of them at the thrift store! You’re welcome. ;)
Bonus #3 - The Omega Juicer VSJ843QS
This is one of our newest gadgets! It’s the Omega VSJ843QS juicer and it works extremely well. We don’t think that juicing is a necessity for maintaining a whole-food plant based diet, but for us it’s been handy lately for juicing greens when we haven’t been eating enough salads. If used wisely, the juicer can be a great addition to your kitchen, but is definitely not a must.
